Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin instructed to expand the use of computer vision technologies for the diagnosis of diseases. This was reported in the press service of the mayor and the government of the capital following a meeting of the presidium of the city government.

“The Moscow government will expand the use of computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies for the diagnosis of diseases. The decree on this issue was signed by the mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin,”the statement reads.

It is noted that the introduction of computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies for decoding medical images (mammograms, CT, MRI and X-ray images), identifying foci of pathologies and making a preliminary diagnosis is one of the priority directions in the development of modern radiation diagnostics.

According to the materials, the capital is one of the first world cities to introduce artificial intelligence-based services into medical practice.

“Several years ago, the Unified Radiological Information Service (ERIS) of UMIAS was created - cloud storage of medical images made in city hospitals and clinics. The ERIS was connected to 1.3 thousand digital devices for radiation diagnostics of city health care institutions - over 80% of the diagnostic equipment available in the city. Over the next few years, the level of connection will be brought to 100%, as analog equipment will be completely decommissioned and replaced with digital models,”the materials say.

It is also known that a single city reference center for radiation diagnostics was created.

“The most important thing is that over the past years, based on the analysis of medical images stored in the ERIS, algorithms for computer vision and artificial intelligence have been developed, which with high reliability determine the presence of one pathology or another in the lungs, blood vessels and other internal organs of a person,” emphasized in message.

It is recalled that the decision to conduct an experiment to introduce AI technologies into practical healthcare was made in November 2019. But due to the pandemic, priorities have been partially shifted. “As soon as possible - in January-April 2020 - experts of the city Diagnostic and Telemedicine Center tested computer vision algorithms to recognize signs of lung damage on CT images of patients with suspected COVID-19. Since May 2020, the use of this technology has become the standard for the diagnosis of coronavirus pneumonia in the city of Moscow,”the materials said.

Every day, AI services process about 20,000 mammograms, CT / LDCT and X-rays. In total, during the experiment, using AI, more than 1.5 million studies were analyzed, which were done in 296 medical organizations - hospitals, clinics and outpatient CT centers.

“Taking into account the positive results of the experiment, the Moscow government decided to expand the use of software products based on computer vision. In 2021, this technology will be used in 10 types of research,”the press service concludes.
