ROME, 3 Feb - RIA Novosti, Alexander Logunov. Italian President Sergio Mattarella received on Wednesday former European Central Bank Chairman Mario Draghi and instructed him to form a new national government, said Hugo Zampetti, Secretary General of the Presidential Chancellery.

"President Sergio Mattarella received Professor Mario Draghi and invited him to form a government, Draghi accepted the mandate. He will make a statement soon," said Zampetti, whose speech was broadcast live on state television Rai.

Earlier, the chairman of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Roberto Fico, whom the president instructed to negotiate with the forces that supported the previous government, said that they showed the impossibility of creating a new majority. Mattarella, after the failure of consultations to resolve the government crisis, said that the country needs a new government as soon as possible to address urgent issues.

The political crisis in Italy began after the small party "Living Italy" (ZhI) announced the withdrawal of its representatives from the Council of Ministers. The demarche of JI led to the fact that, without the votes of this party, the coalition ceased to have a stable parliamentary majority, which ultimately led to the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Draghi served as head of the ECB for eight years. Prior to joining a key role, he, in particular, served as Governor of the Central Bank of Italy, was Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Goldman Sachs International, Executive Director of the World Bank.
