The majority of Russians (72%) believe that a father can take care of a small child and run a household just as well as a mother, according to data from the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).

According to the cited data, 34% of the respondents unequivocally agree with such a statement, another 38% rather agree. At the same time, 26% of respondents do not believe that a father can take care of a small child as well as a mother. According to the survey, 42% of Russians surveyed consider it normal for the mother to go to work after the birth of the child and the father takes care of the newborn; 56% disagree with this.

The respondents also expressed the opinion (60%) that at present the media educate young people in a responsible attitude towards fatherhood, 32% do not agree with this statement. According to VTsIOM data, 44% of the respondents said that the relationship between fathers and children is now more trusting than it was 50 years ago, 46% of respondents stated the opposite opinion.

According to the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion, 48% of Russians are of the opinion that it is more important for the father to provide his children well materially, and not to raise them; 46% of the respondents expressed the opposite opinion. In addition, 89% of the respondents said that, despite the relationship between the parents after the divorce, the mother should not limit the communication of children with the father, 9% hold the opposite opinion.

According to VTsIOM, more than half of Russians (59%) said that they did not have familiar families where the father would perform the functions of raising children. At the same time, 19% said that they have acquaintances where the mother and father earn money equally, but mainly the father is involved in upbringing. Almost every tenth (11%) said that they know complete families, where mainly women earn money, and the father runs the household and brings up the children. According to VTsIOM, 14% of the respondents said they know families in which a man, independently or with the help of relatives, brings up children.

Answering the question about what positive qualities are formed in the first place by paternal upbringing, Russians most often named respect for a woman (41%), courage and courage (32%), responsibility and ability to keep their word (30%), hard work (16%)), dedication (11%).

Distribution of roles

“The issues of gender distribution of roles have been discussed for many years in the context of giving women equal rights and opportunities for self-realization with men. At the same time, significant changes have taken place in the distribution of family responsibilities between spouses. material support of family members, how much active participation in the upbringing of children at all stages of their socialization ", - quoted the director of research at VTsIOM Elena Mikhailova.

She also noted that the images presented in the media do not always contribute to the formation of a responsible attitude towards fatherhood in the younger generation, and stressed that raising the social status of the father is an urgent task, the solution of which is the most important condition for strengthening the institution of the family.

A proactive all-Russian survey was conducted on April 14-15, 2017 among 1,200 respondents over 18 years old through a telephone interview. For this sample, the maximum error size does not exceed 3.5%.
