Parents often think about traveling with children with fear - suddenly there will be so many problems during the flight that it is better to sit at home.
In fact, there is nothing wrong with such trips, you just need to prepare in advance! Ozon.travel, an online service for the sale of air and railway tickets, together with the Anderson chain of family cafes, told Letidor how to get ready for a trip with the baby and organize his meals on the road.
We issue a child ticket
Children under 2 years old fly free of charge, provided they do not occupy a separate seat. But a zero ticket for a baby or, as the airlines call it - "Infanta", must be issued, it will be marked INF.
One adult is allowed to bring only one small child with him / her free of charge.
If there are two kids, one of them will need a separate child ticket with a seat.
Some airlines have transportation rules that differ from the standard ones, for example, tickets for babies are paid, but with a 90% discount.
Tickets for children 2-11 years old (CHD) usually cost less than adults, but not half as often promised by air carriers.
From the age of 12, according to the rules of airlines, children become adults, and they need to buy a ticket for the full price. If you are planning to give your child a 12th birthday present and celebrate his birthday on the trip, do not forget that he will need an adult ticket back.
This also applies to two-year-olds: airlines do not allow a free return flight if the child is already 2 years old.
Spending time at the airport
There is a lot of useful stuff in modern airports for parents with children. Changing tables and sanitary rooms are equipped at every airport, and most have full mother and child rooms, where there are even cribs and microwaves to warm up meals.
These rooms are allowed free of charge, but not everyone.
Usually children under 8 years old are allowed to enter, accompanied by one adult. Up to 12 are allowed only if there is another child under 8 years old.
The mother and child room can be used by disabled children up to 14 years old with one or two accompanying persons.
A package of documents is required:
boarding pass, adult passport and child's birth certificate, a certificate from a pediatrician confirming that the child is healthy and has not had any suspicious contacts with infectious patients.
The certificate must be issued no earlier than 3 days before the flight.
If not, the child will be examined by a doctor at the airport medical center.
We take a stroller with us
Most airlines will transport the stroller for free, provided that it is not in its original packaging and you are traveling with a child. It can be checked in at check-in and picked up on the luggage belt or at the oversized baggage counter. By agreement with the airline's employees, you can not hand over the stroller at check-in, but hand it over right at the gangway and get it back there.
Not all airlines are allowed to take a stroller into the cabin, and if there is an opportunity, you need to meet the size criteria that each carrier has its own. In most cases, these are standard: 55 × 35 × 25 cm with slight variations.
There are more chances to bring a folding lightweight stroller-cane into the cabin, but there are exceptions to this rule. For example, S7 Airlines asks to check in such strollers as baggage. Among those who prohibit carrying any strollers in the cabin, without exception, are Ural Airlines, Pobeda.
At some airports, for example at Sheremetyevo, a stroller can be rented free of charge.
The stroller is given out at check-in, but you need to turn it in before boarding.
How to get the carrycot on the plane
It is most convenient to carry your baby in a carrycot - it is available on many planes, but in limited quantities. The fact is that they cannot be placed between the rows of seats, only on a special wall in front of the first row.
Only Aeroflot has the ability to book a cradle when buying a ticket; other airlines will have to negotiate separately, and not all carriers have such an option at all.
A few days before the flight, it is imperative to contact the airline to clarify whether your flight will have a cradle and indicate that you will need it.
As a rule, the carrier processes the application within 24 hours - this time is needed in order to find out if there are appropriate resources on your plane. A day later, you need to contact the carrier again and clarify the status of the request for the cradle. If your request is confirmed, on the day of departure, you must inform the check-in officer that you left a request for a cradle for a baby and received approval.
Important: it is advisable to request a cradle at least 36 hours before departure.
If you didn't manage to order the bassinet in advance, try asking about it at check-in, there will be little chance of getting it when passengers board.
Passengers who order a cradle and travel with an infant under one year old need to check in directly at the airport, it is impossible to do this online.
When dealing with staff who do not speak Russian, ask for a bassinet or carry-cot.
The flight attendants will install it, and they will pick it up after arrival.
Major airlines have a special children's menu, which must be ordered in advance. Low-cost airlines often do not provide meals. It is better to find out in advance in order to have time to take food for the child with you if necessary.
The standard restrictions on hand luggage do not apply to baby food; it is allowed to take it on board in the amount that the baby needs during the flight.
It is not worth taking water for breeding the mixture with you - it will be provided by the flight attendants.
But if the flight departure time allows, it is better to feed the baby before departure and try to avoid this during the flight. According to pediatricians, feeding at a height provokes colic in a child.
If the flight is expected to be long, then you can take with you in hand luggage:
nuts and dried fruits (in a bag or in the form of bars), vegetables and fruits (pre-washed, cut into pieces and packed in an airtight container), chocolate (it is better to give preference to small chocolates), biscuits (packaged and small), sandwiches (packed in plastic wrap), lollipops (so that the child can better endure the flight).
Please note that you cannot take with you:
overripe fruits, vegetables and berries, citrus fruits - other passengers may be allergic to them, fish, meat, dairy products and eggs.
Returning home from your trip, be sure to read the rules for the carriage of food products on the airline's website. For example, strawberries, grapes, pears and apples cannot be transported from Turkey to Russia, and coconuts and watermelons from Thailand.
Coping with pressure drops
Differences in atmospheric pressure during takeoff and landing are more difficult for children than for adults - the feeling of blocked ears scares them, and with a runny nose, they experience severe discomfort.
With a mild cold, a child can fly, pressure drops do not cause deterioration. It is enough to drip nasal drops before the flight.
Older children can be given gummies or hard candy, or they can sit with their mouths open to help equalize the pressure.
The baby can be watered during takeoff and landing.
Experienced mothers take a special nipple with a small hole for this, so that the baby makes an effort when sucking.
Another option is a pipe with the whistle removed, let the baby blow into it - there will be no sound, and the discomfort in the ears will decrease.
