American researchers have found that banal bumpers that parents hang in their cribs are dangerous to the child's health and can even cause the baby's death. Correspondents of the news agency "Express-Novosti" will tell you why the United States introduced a ban on the sale of sideboards and what is their danger to children's health.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently banned the sale of crib bumpers in his state. To do this, he signed a corresponding document. By the way, New York is far from the first American state to abandon child flaps. Earlier in 2011, a ban on their sale was introduced in Chicago, and in 2013 in Maryland.

The above measures were a consequence of a statement made by the Pediatric Association of America. They talked about the fact that crib bumpers are dangerous for a newborn baby and can cause sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Pediatricians believe that there is no evidence that the bumpers will surely protect the child from injury, but there is already evidence that they can cause potential harm. So, doctors explain that newborn babies are constantly spinning in their cribs, learning to hold their heads. Raising their heads, at some point they may bump their noses against the side, which will prevent the child from breathing normally, and the child may not have the strength to turn his head away …

So, pediatricians cited previously recorded deaths of children aged 1 month to 1 year, which are associated with bumpers and flaps on the bed. There are already 28 such cases in their practice. All of them occurred due to suffocation, when the child rested his nose against the soft side or got tangled in the strings from this side. To be more specific, in 11 cases the child was pressed with his face in one of the parts of the side, in 14 cases the baby was squeezed between the side and the mattress, and, finally, three more babies died, entangled in the belts from the side.

American doctors hope that children's bumpers will still go out of sale not only in the US states, but also in other countries, since there are quite good reasons for this.
