A family heirloom is not necessarily something very pretentious and expensive. Sometimes a seemingly ordinary thing is kept in the house for years and decades, passed from parents to children, grandchildren. Such objects are like beacons that show the way to dear memories. The family of actress Natalia Belokhvostikova also has such a thing.
- My dad was a diplomat. In 1948, he worked in Canada as an Embassy Counselor with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR. Mom Antonina Romanovna worked there as a translator. When dad met her and fell in love, he began to look after her and, having made an offer, presented her with a very beautiful music box.
In the lid of the box under glass is a portrait of a lovely girl in an old beautiful dress, with a dog in her arms. Surprisingly, this girl looked like my mother as a child. Dad intuitively guessed when he chose a gift for a long memory for mom. Inside the box is a powder box with a snow-white powder puff. Dad put his business card in the box. Soon mom and dad returned to Moscow and got married, and a year later I was born, and then my parents took me to the UK.
Mom never parted with this box, she always took it with her. When I was forty-five years old, she handed the box to me. Mom never used it for its intended purpose - as a powder compact. The down jacket remained snow-white. Mom took care of the box as a relic, as a memory of eternal love. After handing over the family heirloom to me, she put her business card in English in the box.
My parents have been gone for a long time. I am saving this box. She always stands in my room. Both business cards are there. When I open it, it seems that at this moment there is a miraculous return to my childhood, adolescence and connection with my parents, as if they are next to me now. This is a very deep and personal feeling. It's like rereading old love letters. I, of course, do not use the box as a powder compact either. The down-padded coat, as it was, is still there, snow-white. I can admire for a long time the portrait of a girl who reminds me of my mother. Sometimes I turn on the musical mechanism, and the box plays a beautiful melody.
I don't know if this souvenir is a talisman. I think yes. This is not only a family heirloom, it is more. I understand that this little thing also keeps my home, because my parents have lived in love all their lives. Then the box will go to my daughter Natasha.
