The boy died of overhydration.
A Colorado (USA) couple has been charged with child abuse that led to his death, according to The New York Post.
The father and stepmother forced their 11-year-old son to drink large amounts of water every day (about 2 liters per day). The child had dark urine. His parents believed that this is a consequence of dehydration, so they made sure that the teenager drank as much as possible.
The police found that on the day of his death, his parents forced him to drink more than 2.5 liters of water in 4 hours. An autopsy showed that the child died of overhydration.
During the arrest, the boy's stepmother said that her stepson suffered from hereditary urological problems, so he often slept in a diaper. The family believed that these problems could be solved by forcing the boy to consume a lot of fluids.
As a result of the investigation, the police concluded that the deceased child, as well as other children (a total of six children under the care of the couple, including the deceased son) were regularly beaten by their parents.
