The most popular names for newborns in Moscow for 10 months of this year were Alexander and Sophia, among the unusual names - Hamlet, Malina and Joy. This was reported in the press service of the capital's registry office.
“The townspeople quite often chose original and sonorous names for the kids. Among the women, one can distinguish Malina (this name was given to five babies), Joy and Madonna (each of them named two newborns), as well as Russia (one girl received this name). Some gave children names that are famous in world literature. Five babies were named Hamlets, and the same number were named Oliver. Under the name of the heroine of the story "Scarlet Sails" by Alexander Grin, Assol registered three little Muscovites, "the message says.
The name Cosmos was given to two newborn boys, another was named Lucifer. In addition, the tendency to choose Greek, Latin and Old Slavic names persisted. For example, seven Lyubavs, four Agathias, one Agrippina and one Lyubomila were registered. Six boys were named after Tryphon, the names Yaropolk, Odysseus, Ermolai, Svetozar, Elizar, Yenisei, Dragoslav, Peresvet, Feofan also met.
“The most popular names remained, as before, Sofia (Sofia) - this was the name of 2 thousand 375 little Muscovites - and Alexander, this name was given to 2 thousand 119 newborn Muscovites,” the press service added.
The capital's registry office clarified that over 10 months of 2020, more than 100 thousand children were born in the capital. The peak of the birth rate fell in the summer - then more than 36.5 thousand children were born.
