In the surgical department of the Kolomna hospital, a three-year-old child underwent an emergency gastroscopy aimed at removing a foreign body that he swallowed, according to the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region. The child arrived at the hospital with his mother, who suspected that something was wrong and suggested that the baby had swallowed a part from a toy. Doctors diagnosed and found a plastic crystal 2 by 1.5 centimeters in size in the patient's stomach. It was removed with an endoscope under general mask anesthesia. “Five to seven children with foreign bodies are admitted to the surgical department of our hospital every month. Most often, such troubles happen to preschool children. We had to remove fragments of toys, coins, metal balls from the gastrointestinal tract. Most complications arise when children swallow magnets,”said Dmitry Matyushenko, children's surgeon at the Kolomna hospital. At the moment, the child has been discharged. He continues treatment at home under the supervision of a pediatrician. Doctors ask parents to be more attentive to the health of children and not to leave them alone with toys that consist of small parts. If the parents have suspicions that the child has swallowed something, they should immediately go to the hospital.
