“We have asked the federal government to immediately stop using American Airlines aircraft for this purpose. We do not want to be associated with separation of families and, even worse, profit from it,” the airline said in a statement.
The issue of separation of families of migrants in the United States has escalated in recent weeks into a major crisis. Due to the "zero tolerance" policy announced in April, the authorities are required to detain families with children illegally crossing the border, after which parents are sent to isolation wards and children to special detention centers, since children are not subject to criminal liability. In May - early June, more than 2 thousand children were detained in this way.
Opposition Democrats and civil society groups have sharply criticized the Trump administration for separating families, and a number of Republicans have joined them. Trump has made controversial statements that he does not like this practice, but the laws must be respected.
