Doctors from the CSTO 1 performed a unique operation on the baby, whose weight is 530 grams. The newborn had a congenital pathology, which, if not for the intervention of doctors, could have resulted in a fatal outcome, AiF-Ural reported on Thursday, March 12.

Specialists diagnosed the child with congenital obstruction of the esophagus with a lower tracheoesophageal fistula. If not for the intervention of doctors, then the baby could simply die. “The essence of this diagnosis is complete obstruction of the esophagus, which does not connect to the stomach. This pathology does not allow the child to eat, if the operation is not carried out as soon as possible, a lethal outcome is inevitable. Surgical interventions for such a diagnosis are carried out on the basis of our medical institution, but for such a small baby for the first time,”commented Vladislav Chudakov, head of the neonatal surgery department.
Due to vital signs, the transportation of the baby was impossible, so the little patient was operated on right in the intensive care unit for newborns and premature babies. All work took about 50 minutes. Through a small incision, the segments of the esophagus were mobilized, ligated, the tracheoesophageal fistula was transected, and sutures were applied and tied. In this case, the upper segment of the esophagus was up to 5 mm in diameter, and the lower one - about 2-3 cm. As a result of the intervention, the surgeons managed to restore the patency of the esophagus in the baby.
The chief physician of the CSTO 1, Oleg Averyanov, noted that the defect was corrected with minimal trauma and maximum effect for the baby.
Recall that before that, the doctors of the CSTO 1 performed another operation, which also became unique. Then a 17-year-old patient had a malignant liver tumor and a thrombus in the inferior vena cava removed under extracorporeal circulation, that is, when the heart was “off”.
